SCHOOL CAMPUS MASTERPLAN

Athens, Greece
Masterplan, Education

PILA was invited to submit a masterplan proposal for a new school campus in Athens. The campus spans a site of 31,000 m² and includes buildings for Kindergarten, Elementary, Gymnasium / High School, IB, an indoor sports hall, and administration, totaling 21,000 m².

We envision a school that equips the citizens of tomorrow with the necessary tools and skills while shaping personalities with humanity and empathy. A school that engages with international educational principles while embodying the values of the Greek Mediterranean landscape and way of life.

The concept of “The Street” constitutes the central organizing element of the new campus. It traverses the campus from the main entrance and connects the various educational buildings and outdoor spaces. Like in the most renowned cities, the Street lends a strong identity and flexibility to the campus. It serves as a meeting point, circulation route, and connector of different uses and experiences. It creates a flow of students and teachers at the heart of the campus, linking and showcasing the school’s various activities. It is the reference point where all internal movements of the school converge. It is the place where students will meet, love, play, argue, and dream.

The traffic organization, both on the campus and building levels, promotes interactivity. All classrooms and laboratories are connected to semi-outdoor corridors and external spaces, allowing learning to extend into them.

The Street structures the school based on the natural sequence of age groups and educational levels. Starting from Kindergarten and ending in adulthood, it cohesively connects the three distinct school experiences: Kindergarten, Elementary, and Gymnasium/High School. Like in a city, it is an element that allows for the connection of different uses and experiences, with great flexibility as these uses can change over time without losing identity.
